Maintaining a well-functioning transportation system and securing our nation's critical infrastructure are two of the most important responsibilities of the federal government. Both are essential to our country’s economic prosperity and global competitiveness.
The Chickamauga Lock is a vital piece of infrastructure in our region, with many important businesses depending upon it. A closure of the 76-year-old structure would eliminate 318 miles of navigable waters on the Tennessee River. Over the past several years, we have made incredible strides towards funding and rebuilding.
On April 25, 2016 I joined officers from the Army Corps of Engineers to resume construction on the Chickamauga Dam’s new lock. We accomplished this restart by reforming the trust fund, increasing the fees that barge owners pay to use the lock (they voluntarily supported the increase), and ensuring through legislation that Chickamauga Lock remained a high priority for the Corps.
During my time in Congress I have helped pass fiscally responsible bills that have improved our nation’s infrastructure, reformed our surface transportation programs and refocused programs addressing national priorities. I will continue to work to make the transportation system safer and more efficient.

Washington, D.C.— On Monday, April 25, 2016 Congressman Chuck Fleischmann will visit with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ officials for an update and to observe the restart of work on Chickamauga Dam’s new lock. As a House Appropriator, Fleischmann has worked tirelessly to ensure that this project would receive the nearly $30 million needed for fiscal year 2016. Construction on the new lock provides relief for many worried about the condition of the current lock, which was built in the 1930s.

WASHINGTON− Congressman Chuck Fleischmann organized a bipartisan group of legislators from around the Tennessee Valley, including all nine Tennessee House members, in the fight for the Chickamauga Lock. For years, the root problem was ignored in favor of earmarks. Now, there has been a change to the funding mechanism for the Inland Waterways Trust Fund, and there is additional funding available for projects in the inland waterways system.
