RELEASE: Fleischmann on Iran Sanctions

October 26, 2017

Washington, D.C.Congressman Chuck Fleischmann (TN-03) released the following statement on passage of H.R. 1698, the Iran Ballistic Missiles and International Sanctions Enforcement Act:

"It is clear Iran is a belligerent actor in global politics seeking to destabilize the region for their own power and advance their perverse ideology. They are the world's leading supporter of terrorism and their rhetoric toward their neighbor, Israel, and the United States remains hostile. Iran continues to conduct ballistic missile tests with no regard to binding resolutions from the United Nations Security Council. These tests and their unwavering support of fundamentalist militias show they have no interest in being a productive member of the international community.

I stand with the people of Israel, and was proud to support non-nuclear sanctions, stop the funding of terrorist activities, and condemn Iran."

Background:

H.R. 1698 will implement non-nuclear proliferation sanctions and broaden efforts to penalize any foreign entity that seeks to provide financial or material assistance to Iran's ballistic missile program. The President will report to Congress to determine if the party in question is providing support to Iran's ballistic missile program. According to the 2016 Worldwide Threat Assessment, Tehran would use ballistic missiles as its preferred method of delivering nuclear weapons. Congressman Fleischmann was a cosponsor of the legislation.
