President Obama submits free trade agreements to Congress

October 4, 2011

Helps further the process of implementing point 7 of Congressman Fleischmann’s “Less Government, More Jobs” plan

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Barack Obama has submitted pending free trade agreements with Panama, Colombia and South Korea to Congress for approval. Point 7 of Congressman Chuck Fleischmann’s jobs plan for America that he introduced last week calls for increased free trade, and, specifically, for the President to send these 3 agreements to Congress for approval.

“When I released my jobs plan last week, I called on the President to send the pending free trade agreements with Panama, Colombia and South Korea to Congress for approval. We need these jobs now, and the President was delaying further action. However, he has finally submitted those agreements to Congress for approval, and I look forward to supporting them,” Fleischmann said.

In 2010, U.S. exports accounted for $1.3 trillion, or about 8% of our Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The White House’s own estimate says up to 70,000 jobs could be created with the implementation of the South Korea trade agreement alone.

According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Tennessee’s 3rd District has 11,305 jobs “directly supported by exports” and $3,912,964,353 in “total merchandise exports”.
