House Passes Continuing Resolution to Avoid Government Shutdown
WASHINGTON− Today the House passed a Continuing Resolution (CR), H.R. 933, preventing a government shutdown and funding the government through the end of the fiscal year, September 30, 2013.
The legislation includes a full-year Defense Appropriations bill, as well as a full-year Military Construction/Veterans Affairs Appropriations bill. Outside of the Departments of Defense and Veterans affairs, the CR will extend funding at last year’s levels. Funding within the bill is subject to the President’s sequestration, meaning the rate will stay at the sequestration spending level of $982 billion.
“President Obama’s budget proposal is on pace to be historically late and the Senate has gone over 1,400 days without passing a budget. Continuing Resolutions are not the way we should be governing, but unfortunately have become the norm.
“Passage of this CR will keep sequestration spending levels in place while ensuring the safety of our military men and women serving at home and around the world. We have some tough budget challenges ahead, and I look forward to working towards a budget that reigns in Washington’s out of control spending. I hope this year Senate Democrats will join House Republicans in passing a responsible budget.“
